이 영화는 다큐멘터리.  그러니까 좀 황당한 얘긴데, 미국에서는 6장 팔린 음반이 남아프리카에서는 밀리언 셀러였던 Rodriguez라는 무명 가수를 찾은 이야기다.  70년대 초반에 두 장인가 음반을 내고는 '무대 위에서 분신을 했다', '아니다 무대 위에서 권총자살이다' 등등의 루머(마저도 풍성하지 못했음)를 지닌 멕시코계 미국인 (말하자면) 프로테스탄트 포크 뮤지션이다.  다큐멘타리 형식임에도 불구하고 꽤나 흥미진진한 내용 전개는 이 영화를 상당히 재미있게 만들어놨다.  그만큼 이 사람의 이야기가 특이한 것이었겠지.  게다가 로드리게즈의 노래들 또한 상당히 괜찮아서 영화를 보는 내내 귀도 즐거웠었다.  이 영화를 통해 다큐멘터리 형식을 다시 생각하게 되었다.  그 동안 다큐멘터리 하면 건조한 화면에 과장된 나레이션만 떠올렸었는데, 이렇게 흥미롭게도 만들어 낼 수 있다니.  짝짝짝.  조만간 이 분의 음반 (아마도 사운드트랙을) 한 장을 살 생각이다.  타이틀 Sugar Man은 참 괜찮다.  강추!
